Sanchez’s dream is everyone else’s Nightmare

Filed under: Uncategorized — shoeking @ 5:00 am

It makes one wonder what drives a fighter like Diego The Nightmare Sanchez. He fights with the intensity of a tsunami inside the octagon where he overpowers and smashes his opponents. In the process of his destructive path he leaves men cut and beaten to a bloody pulp. Men with skills and qualifications like his last victim Karo Parisyan. Parisyan, a highly regarded martial artist, was supposed to be Sanchezs stiffest test. The Armenian-American had scored wins over Nick Diaz and this years The Ultimate Fighter winner Matt Serra. Parisyan was on a roll and Sanchez was the pebble that would throw Parisyan off course.

The twenty-four-year-old from Albuquerque, New Mexico took the fight to Parisyan from the start and never relented. He grounded and pounded Parisyan in a classic confrontation that showcased Sanchezs intense style.

Running Hot And Cold

Filed under: Uncategorized — shoeking @ 5:00 am

Got a question of your own? Just send it in and I’ll get to work! If you’re asking about something you saw on air, be sure to include the Web address of the station where you saw it.

Let’s wade right in, shall we?

Q: Hi. I was just reading about not getting the same meat as in a restaurant. I have tried to sear the steaks first, but the grill doesn’t get that hot unless you put it on “clean” for an hour. I have also learned how to cook a steak pretty well in my 12-inch frying pan. I have ruined a few because of getting them too hot. I have had a couple replaced by the company but was told by Oneida and Farberware not to heat the pans that hot … it ruins them. Well, is there a frying pan that I can get “that hot” without ruining it? I have tried some of the “better ones” with the same problem.

Gifts, Smiles at Westside

Filed under: Uncategorized — shoeking @ 5:00 am

THERMAL – Students at Westside School took a short break from class work Tuesday to pick up gifts.

The 558 kindergarten through sixth-grade students walked up to Salvation Army volunteers with wide smiles to receive a new outfit, new shoes and a toy Tuesday morning. Westside was the only school chosen in the country by The Salvation Army to receive presents after the holidays, said Capt. Saul Doria, Salvation Army Corps officer in Cathedral City.

Plastic Wal-Mart bags were stuffed with tennis shoes, clothes, school supplies, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Hundreds of private donors, local dentists and volunteers made the gift-giving possible, said Capt. Jessica Doria.

The Salvation Army spent about $50 per child, Jessica Doria said. There are 580 students at Westside.

Strength training, better shoes help

Filed under: Uncategorized — shoeking @ 5:00 am

After the recent column on PFPS (patellofemoral pain syndrome aka runner’s knee), several readers sent questions about whether they had this particular ailment.

As a reminder, PFPS is caused more from alignment problems, muscle and tendon weakness or tightness or overpronation. Pain is usually felt in the front or inside of the kneecap, and is especially felt walking down stairs or after long periods of sitting still.

Runners can usually “run through” this problem, and strength training and improvement in running shoes are recommended.

Runners who mentioned pain in the center of the kneecap or just below it may have what is known as patellar tendinitis. This is an inflammation of the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shin bone. It is commonly caused by overuse during repetitive movements like running and jumping.

Nike+ iPod Sport Kit AnyShoe Adapter

Filed under: Uncategorized — shoeking @ 5:00 am

Have a hankering for the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit, but don’t feel like shelling out nearly 100 clams for those special Nike shoes? Now you can attach the SwitchEasy RunAway AnyShoe Adapter to the shoelaces of any ol’ shoes and slip that little sensor inside, instead of placing it in that special recessed area underneath the insole of the Nike+ shoes. Pick out your favorite color AnyShoe Adapter for under 12 bucks.

Be warned: while all the other sheep are gushing about the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit, I have a gripe. I have the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit and the accompanying Nike Moire shoes, and I like those shoes better than the sensor, which can’t seem to figure out how far or fast I’m walking. Maybe it’s just for runners, but for walking the thing is wildly inaccurate, even to the point of being insulting.

HPER celebrates 60 years of growth, movement, change

Filed under: Uncategorized — shoeking @ 5:00 am

You won’t find any tutus or pointe shoes at the IU Contemporary Dance Program’s fall concert “Grow/Move/Change,” which will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the Ruth N. Halls Theatre.

Dancers who wear wireless lights on their bodies will dance to a piece that “examines issues of self-identity and truth revealed by light,” according to a press release from the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. The piece was choreographed by IU theater and drama professor George Pinney.

One piece, choreographed by IU Contemporary Dance faculty member Gwen Hamm, uses live music to focus on revolutionary leaders and their impact on society, according to the press release for the event.

For the dancers and faculty involved, this concert isn’t just a chance to showcase the work that began in late August, when the dancers auditioned for each of the pieces.
